Antioxidants – Provide protection against oxidative reactions. Antioxidants function as a stabilizer in formulations and often act as anti-aging ingredients. Examples include; BHT, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), and Tocopherol (Vitamin E).

Chelating Agents – Defend against metal impurities that can come from many sources including; cosmetic ingredients, water systems, equipment, etc. Chelating Agents grab a hold of these ions to stabilize formulas and increase product shelf life.  Examples include; Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA, and Citric Acid.

Humectants – Act as moisturizers by drawing water from the epidermis and the dermis. Additionally, they inhibit water evaporation from cosmetic products. Examples include; Glycerin, Sorbitol 70, and Propylene Glycol.

Emollients – Restore oils and lipids in the skin, providing protection and lubrication. Examples include; Coconut Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Mineral Oil, Isopropyl Palmitate, GMS, Polyquartenium 7, and Dimethicone.

pH Buffers –  Adjust pH levels to that of the application surface as well as stabilizing formulations by meeting specific pH values of certain ingredients. Examples include; Citric Acid, Lactic Acid, Caustic Soda, and TEA 99%.

Plasticizers – Used in nail polishes, nail hardeners, sunscreens, and film forming hair styling products as a film softener to impart flexibility as the film dries. Examples include; Mineral Oil, Dimethicone, and Castor Oil.

Preservatives – Prevent growth of molds, yeast, and bacteria in order to sustain product stability and lengthen shelf life. Preservatives range in effectiveness and capability and thus are used in combination with one another. Examples include; Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, DMDM, Benzyl Alcohol, and Phenoxyethanol.

Solvents – Multiple functions within formulations including; dissolving of solid ingredients, mixing liquids, modifying texture, aiding product application, and adjusting viscosity. Examples include; Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Isopropyl Alcohol, Ethanol, Ethyl Acetate, and Acetone.

Surfactants – Act as the surface active agent providing very unique chemical structures including hydrophilic and hydrophobic. Surfactants have many functions including; emulsification, solubilization, wetting, conditioning, and stabilizing. Most importantly, surfactants provide the cleansing, foaming, and foam boosting properties to a formula. Surfactants are broken up into four groups with examples below.

(1) Anionic – Stearic Acid, SLES-70, ALS-30, Taurates, Isothionate, Sulfosuccinates

(2) Cationic – Polyquarternium-7, Polyquarternium-10

(3) Amphoteric – Coco Betaine, Lauryl Betaine, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Hydroxysultaines

(4) Nonionic – GMS, Polysorbate 20, Lauryl Glucoside, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide

Thickeners – Simply put, thicken formulas by increasing viscosity of cosmetic products. Additionally, thickeners improve stability, appearance, and applicability. Examples include; Xanthan gum, Guar gum, Carbomer 940, Carnaubua Wax, and Cetyl Alcohol.
